When it comes to "Motel Noir" I would suggest a look at Stephen King's
"All That I love Will Be Carried Away" in his short story collection
"Everything's Eventual." It's not horror, not woo-woo. It is about as dark as writing gets. And its picture of a Motel 6 in the windswept plains is tone perfect.
