    This thread started by talking about how many non-tough hardboiled writers overcompensate in their fiction, how their heroes can kick more ass. So it's interesting that the opposite is true of the work of Lansdale, a legit tough guy. Don't get me wrong, his Hap and Leonard kick a lot of ass in their series, but they both take a bad beatdown in one book (blanking on title). And they do not just shrug it off; it deeply affects them, both physically and mentally. Mark
