> BTW, I also bought Hard-Boiled, edited by Bill Pronzini and Jack Adrian
This is one of my favourite anthologies. I appreciated that the stories were ordered by decade, that each had a short author bio, and feel that overall the selections were of good quality. This was one of my early adventures into hard-boiled fiction other than the biggest names, and I suppose that, in retrospect, one weak point might be that some stories (the Hammett, Paul Cain, Chandler, Ross Macdonald) it contains are over-anthologized. Still, any book with Raoul Whitfield, Frederick Nebel, Elmore Leonard, David Goodis, and Andrew Vachss clearly has a lot going for it!
Sorry but I can't help you with the Ames collection.
