This is neither hardboiled nor noir but nonetheless it's the kind of book
that I suspect will appeal to a lot of folks on this list. It reads a little
like a contemporary Erskine Caldwell -- although Freeman's novel is set in
the backwoods of Vermont. Great voice, lovely writing, very little
internalization, a Greek chorus of old-timers, clever
rescuing-the-damsel-from-the-dragon plot, some terrific characters, and it's
only 160 pages.
