Bradbury's _Death is a lonely business_ (1985) is an unforgettable
noir novel of Los Angeles. Bradbury also contributed stories to the
mystery pulps. He moved with ease between genres. Now that the name
has been brought up, I think it's possible that Crumley was influenced
by Bradbury. Both exhibit the volcano gene. When Bradbury gets going,
the intensity can become almost unbearable, and the same is true of
Crumley.
