Well there are the obvious ones:

Parker's Spenser series must be close to the big "four-oh" by now.
And Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer series ran twenty-one (I think) books over
twenty-seven years.
And that seems right to me. After all, MacDonald's books are twice as good
as anything Parker's written (since the guy doesn't even do second drafts
anymore, if in fact he ever did), so it strikes me as fitting that he wrote
half-as many series books.
