Someone asked about mysteries that took place during slavery,
or that involved slavery. The Benjamin January series by
Barbara Hambly fit the bill. It takes place in antebellum New
Orleans and discusses in great depth (too great for my
liking) the layers of society that existed at that time. A
FREE MAN OF COLOR is the first in the series. January is a
black man who is a physician, but can't practive openly
because of oppressive laws. These aren't noir or hardboiled
books, but there are occasional scenes that will stir your
lunch around.
