And there are always exceptions to the "rules," many of which
work, if they do at all, because they are exceptions. If
"Pennies From Heaven" would have hit the mark so well that a
whole new raft of similar movies were spawned, I don't really
think they all would have been as successful, either
artistically or commercially, as the originator.
I may be wrong, but I think a juxtaposition like "Pennies"
works only because it is unique, or nearly so. Similar
attempts wouldn't wear nearly as well, kind of like an exotic
ice cream flavor at Baskin-Robbins. Good on the odd hot
summer night but nothing to worry the good old holy trifecta
of chocolate-vanilla-strawberry.
