In my opinion, the Sjowall-Wahloo series is one of the great
classics of using a police procedural to draw a fascinating
portrait of the social history of an area and an era
(Southern Sweden from Stockholm to Malmo, and the 60s-70s),
and the characters of the cops are well-drawn and grow and
change over the series. How many writers had a hard-bitten
communist cop?
I can't say I'm a fan of moving it to San Francisco.
It kind of misses the point (or most of the point)--like the
silliness of Philip Marlowe in London.
