When you're talking about "GREATEST crime writers" I don't
think Erle Stanley Gardner makes the cut. Sure, he was a
crime writer, but "great"? Not in my opinion. I think
Patricia Highsmith as the #1 is a stretch, not much of a
stretch, but its a bit of one. In my opinion Ruth Rendell is
vastly better at plotting credible novels than Highsmith was.
She, Leonard, Chandler, Hammett and McBain should be higher
on the list.
