Ed,
Re your comments below:
"Mr. Spillane in his circus movie RING OF FEAR (1954) was
shown today. Clyde Beatty's circus is the setting, with
Mickey as himself investigating crimes."
It also features Mickey's cop buddy, Jack Stang, Mickey's own
choice to play Mike Hammer, as a private eye buddy of Mckey's
named "Mike."
Stang played Hammer in a short,
Spillane-written-directed-and-produced film called
"The Mike Hammer Screen Test," which, unfortunately, no
longer exists except as a script and some stills.
"Jack Stang" is also the name of the retired cop who is the
hero of Spillane's posthumously published Hard Case novel,
DEAD STREET.
"Not really hardboiled or noir, but it's great fun to see
Mickey as a sleuth."
For crying out loud, Ed! I'll go along with you on not noir
(it is, after all, in color), but if a movie that features
Mickey Spillane and Mike Hammer (not fully named, but obvious
nonetheless) collabrating on an investigation isn't
hard-boiled, what on earth is it? Cozy?
