For good or worse, Bogart put a face on the quintessential
film PI. But when I read Chandler, I don't put a face on
Marlowe, and the same happens with a lot of PIs and other
hardboiled heroes. I see them as shadows, mainly operational
characters rather than existential. And when such characters
are described explicitly, I tend to skip ahead.
So, my Marlowe on the page doesn't evoke Bogart or any
particular face.
