There's a Morrissey in the novel as well, he appears in the
fourth rendezvous. William C. Morrissey, to be exact.
While Morrissey really was the singer's real name, Marr the
guitar player was really called John Maher and adopted Marr
as a stage name after The Smiths had formed. This indicates
that they were actually aware of Woolrich's novel. Or we
would have to assume a coincidence of almost Woolrichian
proportions.
And it should be noted that this story took place long before
Johnny Marr went on to play guitar for The Smiths. Sorry, bad
jokes.
