Malcolm Braly is one of the best of the Gold Medal authors.
In terms of the quality of the words on the page, I'd go as
far as to say that of the GM authors I've read, Braly's only
rivalled by Charles Williams. ON THE YARD is a superb prison
novel. Actually, no need to qualify that: it's a superb
novel.
Having said that, I tried to read IT'S COLD OUT THERE twice
and lost interest on both occasions. But I suspect that's my
fault rather than Braly's, so I wouldn't say it was a bad
novel (the writing's fine), just that the characters and
milieu didn't hold my peculiar interest.
