I think Peckinpah wanted to make a Peckinpah film. You can't
blame him for that... changing the story is standard
practice, after all.
And speaking of film and literature side by side, I recently
caught the movie of _3:10 to Yuma_ on television, and then,
to refresh my memory, I reread the Leonard story. The story
is superior, but if you see the film without having read the
story, or if you dismiss the comparison, it works very well.
You might still say that the story is a masterpiece and the
film merely very good, but that's splitting hairs...
