Mark,
Re your question below:

an Edgar in

win for? And

Not quite. He was the first to win an Edgar in two different
catgories in the same year. And he was the first to win three
Edgars in three separate categories.
The wins were for A TIME OF PREDATORS (best first novel '69),
"Goodbye, Pops" (best short story, '69), and "No Immunity for
Murder," an episode of KOJAK (best teleplay from a series,
'75). The latter was his first TV script, starting a very
successful TV writing career.
Since then, Dick Francis has won two Edgars in the same year
(best novel Grand Master), and Donald Westlake has won Edgars
in at least three different categories (novel, short story,
and screenplay).
