I think THE SWORDS OF MARS is pretty hardboiled, at least in
the beginning where John Carter infiltrates a gang of
assassins. I also seem to remember that a writer of
Burroughs's biography (Fiorentino? Taliaferro? Taliareffo?)
says the same thing, even though some regard this one of the
weakest of Burroughs's Mars novels.
