Regarding Brackett and the script for THE BIG SLEEP... I've
wondered about the evolution from screenplay (http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Big_Sleep.pdf)
to final version. For example, I think the screenplay's
handling of Carmen's intrusion into Marlowe's apartment
(instead of crawling naked into Marlowe's bed, she sucks on
one of his chess pieces) is a very clever Code dodge, and in
some ways conveys Carmen's intrusion upon and violation of
Marlowe's home more powerfully than the novel itself.
I'm also curious about the source for the anecdote in
the message below (copied from the Rara-Avis 1998 archive).
Is Michael Sharp still around?

He collaborated on the script for THE BIG SLEEP, he
didn't write it. Among those with whom he worked on it was
Leigh Brackett, a good writer in her own right (who won an
Oscar for her work on the script for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK,
and also worked on the script for Altman's LONG GOODBYE, if
memory serves correctly). Brian
