While reading Rick Helms's Back Alley Websine, I came across this article that I believe many here at Rara_Avis will enjoy:

A Good Enough Man For Any World: The 19th Century Roots of Hardboiled Detective Fiction, by JESS NEVINS

Go to:

http://www.backalleywebzine.com/

And click it in the table of contents. The title and sub-title tell what it's about.

Interesting stuff, considering so many of his here thought that detective fiction popped straight out of Poe.

Mr. Nevins does mention the obvious MOONSTONE by Wilkie Collins and others that have mentioned, but he goes all the way back to the 18th Century.

Thanks Jess and Rick.
