Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water is a classic of the wild
pet genre, and was followed by three sequels, two by Maxwell,
The Rocks Remain and Raven Seek Thy Brother, and one by John
Lister-Kaye, The White Island. The two Maxwell sequels are
dark and tragic (not at all "enchanting" as Ring of Bright
Water is often described) and underline the unpredictability
of wild animals that I referred to in an earlier post --
indeed the danger and foolhardiness of believing that they
can be like domestic pets. If there is such a thing as wild
animal pet memoir noir, The Rocks Remain in particular is it.
Not recommended for animal lovers who are bummed out or
borderline depressive.
