George Alec Effinger wrote three books that were a
noir/hard-boiled/PI
& sci-fi mix. They are:
When Gravity Fails (1987)
A Fire in the Sun (1989)
The Exile Kiss (1991)
When Gravity Fails is a GREAT book and is by far the best of
the bunch. The epigraph is an extended quote from from The
Simple Art of Murder. All three were re-issued recently by
Orb in 2005 & 2006.
Effinger had health problems his whole life that resulted in
high dollar medical bills. He wasnt able to pay them and
declared bankruptcy. Here's where it gets interesting.
Louisiana's system of law descends from the Napoleonic Code
instead of English Common Law. This meant that the copyrights
to his works could have reverted to his creditors but at the
bankruptcy hearing the hospital did not show up so Effinger
was able to retain his copyrights.
Re: Moorcock - All of the major New Worlds writers: Michael
Moorcock; M John Harrison; J G Ballard & of course James
Sallis all have spoken at length of their admiration for
Hammett and Chandler.
