If nothing else, those sexually oriented novels were a great
apprenticeship for a lot of writers, and a landing pad for
other pros who had lost their markets. Many of them were not
novels about sex, per se, but novels that included
individuals who participated in sex, which is to say, most of
us. Whatever the merits of any individual book, by the time
Westlake and Block began writing under their own names, they
had their voice, and it was created in the books for hire
they wrote in the early sixties.
