RARA-AVIS: Hard-boiled Nobel?

Steinbeck. Of Mice and Men is noir. Think of the Robert Burns poem; mice and men are doomed, doomed, doomed. Steinbeck ain't big on campassion, either. He's the dispassionate biologist peeking through the microscope at his specimen. Kinda like God, dontcha think? And God is pretty hard-boiled. I mean, the Last Judgment and all, well, it's so final. You get screwed for eternity.
