************** I'm 100% behind Mr. Ahern on this. Just
because it's a nasty old world and the protagonist has to
make some tough decisions doesn't mean he's screwed. My
interpretation of The Maltese Falcon is that Spade is
victorious (not screwed) in the end because he fails to
succumb to sentiment.
