John Le Carre's amazing "Spy Who Came in from the Cold" is a
good example of an espionage novel as noir. The spy in this
one, Alex Leamus, ends up paying a dear price for living a
life of cynicism, deceit, betrayal, even if he did it in
service of his country. One of my favorites.
