Thanks for passing this sad news along Jim. I agree with your
accessment. Gardner was a very talented writer with great
range. His James Bond sendup series featuring the bumbling
Boysie Oakes is quite funny and he also wrote some of the
best serious fiction about the world of espionage. His novels
featuring Herbie Kruger are a great achievement. If that
wasn't enough, he wrote a grim little police series including
the excellent A COMPLETE STATE OF DEATH (1969)and two
carefully researched novels featuring Proessor
Moriarty.
I always felt Gardner's work on the James Bond novels--fair
or not-- limited his own reputation.
