Just finished this 1930 book by Armitage Trail. It wasn't
nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It was simple and
entertaining. It played a little off Social Darwinism. Femmes
fatale weighed in too, from both the temptation and the
betrayal side of things. The movie, which had only the
slightest resemblance to the book, was better than the
book.
One thing I found entertaining was that the old
"laughed mirthlessly" phrase popped up a couple times.
I have fond memories of that coming up on a regular
basis in Paul Cain's Fast One.
