Dorothy Hughes also reviewed for the magazine "Mystery",
published in Glendale in the early nineteen eighties. I think
this was the last of her reviewing posts. I was also writing
for "Mystery", contributing feature interviews, with W.R.
Burnett, Jonathan Latimer, John Bright
(The Public Enemy), and also with Hughes herself. It was a
thrill to get to know her and share the pages of the
magazine. Though a private person, Hughes came across as
gregarious and supportive, always ready to help a newcomer.
Like Pauline Kael, she had her favorites, but nothing excited
her more than a well-told tale.
I don't believe that any of her reviews have been
collected.
Other who were reviewing in Southern California, at the San
Diego Union, were Howard Browne and Bob Wade.
