A few perhaps not so obvious suggestions. Not all of these
novels are that good, btw, but they might be interesting for
the comparison in that the corresponding movie is much more
famous or very different or much better. Or all of those
things.
Robert L. Pike: MUTE WITNESS (into Peter Yates'
BULLITT)
John Ball: IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
Len Deighton: THE IPCRESS FILE
John Godey: THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE
Frederick Forsyth: THE DAY OF THE JACKAL (two adaptions,
haven't seen the remake but Fred Zinneman's 1973 version is
terrific)
Joseph Hayes: THE DESPERATE HOURS (two adaptions, the remake
from 1990 is possibly one of the worst movies ever)
Dorothy B. Hughes: IN A LONELY PLACE
Budd Schulberg: ON THE WATERFRONT
Gerald Petievich: Money Men (into James B. Harris' THE
BOILING POINT - very underrated)
Brian Garfield: DEATH WISH
James Ellroy: BLOOD ON THE MOON (into James B. Harris'
COP)
A few non-anglos, they may be hard to find:
Auguste Le Breton: DU RIFIFI CHEZ LES HOMMES (into Jules
Dassin's RIFIFI)
Albert Simonin: TOUCHEZ PAS AU GRISBI (adapted by Jacques
Becker in 1953 - is this available on DVD? Haven't seen this
for 30 years)
Maj Sjö·¡¬l & Per Wahlö¶º THE ABOMINABLE MAN (into Bo
Widerberg's THE MAN ON THE ROOF in 1976, much superior to the
novel)
Friedrich Dú²¥®att: DAS VERSPRECHEN (several adaptions, e.g.
Sean Penn's THE PLEDGE)
Heinrich Bö¬¬º DIE VERLORENE EHRE DER KATHARINA BLUM (into
Volker Schlö®¤¯rff's THE LOST HONOR OF KATHARINA BLUM)

Films
Hey,
Started a new section in my website dedicated to crime books
that became crime film. Thompson, Goodis and McBain are the
first three authors and the section will be updated often.
Any favorites? Lemme know.
Thanks,
William
