Apropos of, well, absolutely nothing really, but I thought
you might find it interesting.
Herb Ellis, the actor who played Wilbur in PETER GUNN, was
also the first actor (at least on TV; there were two others
on radio) to play Joe Friday's partner, Detective Frank
Smith, on DRAGNET.
Ben Alexander took over the role after Ellis played it for
four episodes, and became the actor most identified with the
part. So identified, in fact, that when Webb revived the show
in the '60's, and Alexander was no longer available, he
created a different partner, Bill Gannon, and hired Harry
Morgan to play him.
