Yeah, it's great. The best one in the Crane series. Headed
for the Hearse (which I translated into Finnish some 20 years
ago; my very first book-length translation) is almost as
good, and the rest are all fun to read, too. There are five
books in the series.
Latimer wrote some pretty good movies scripts, too. I just
saw his version of Hammett's The Glass Key, and it was a
powerful film, although Alan Ladd never was a very convincing
tough guy. Brian Donleavy saved a lot. His role reminded me
of the one in The Great McGinty by Preston Sturges. That one
I also saw recently. Great movie, too. Hardboiled and
hilarious.
