"Smila's (sp?) Sense of Snow is in Finland or somewhere like
that."
Iceland, actually (and "Smilla"). Is the book noir? I haven't
read it, but it was promoted in Europe as high
literature.
Finland has Tapani Bagge and Antti Tuomainen. Tapani (a
fellow Rara-Avian) is a veteran, and Tuomainen has one book
and one coming. Quite Ken Bruen -influenced stuff. There's
also a guy called Sakari Vainikka who's had two or three
books coming out from a vanity press - I don't know why that
is, but in the crime fiction circles his clearly original
novels have been hailed pretty much and labelled "noir".
There are some jokey private eye writers working in Finland
and some police procedural writers, but I wouldn't call them
noir.
