I enjoyed Megan Abbott's second noir (THE SONG IS YOU) and
finished her debut noir (DIE A LITTLE). The narrative is more
straightforward, and the story is tight. The narrator is Lora
King; the year is 1954; and the spot is Pasadena, CA. Now
that puts you in the right place and right time for a noir.
Lora is a prim schoolteacher who lives with her brother Bill.
Alice Steel, a seamstress for a movie company, captivates,
then marries Bill. Lora turns protective of Bill and jealous
even. Things turn darker. Both noirs are great reads.
