Seems like Lehane has taken over this thread, and personally I don't even consider him noir. FWIW, I thought MYSTIC RIVER meandering and slightly pointless, but loved SHUTTER ISLAND. Nothing wrong with a bit of genre schlock. I don't care if it's art or entertainment - it was a v.enjoyable book.
