I just finished « Drive » by James Sallis.
I'm not sure it was already discussed here.
A short, dense and gripping novel, a kind of
homage to classic hard-boiled novels, but being neither a
mockery nor a pasticcio of the genre.
If the link to Westlake's Parkers is obvious, the
quality of writing and its style evoke Hemingway in some
parts of the novel. There is also the typical Sallis
treatment of time lines…
An excellent novel. By an excellent author.
I recommend it to William Denton who, as we know
all, looks after novels telling the story of characters with
a professional attitude. Here, the central character, and
others, fit the request: at a 200% level.
