Kerry asked: What is the opposite of moral; immoral or
amoral?
************ miker aswered: Immoral.
I'll add:
Immoral may be the opposite in the sense of countering
accepted morality. But I've always thought that
self-conscious rebellion, often point by point, still reifies
the thing being rejected. However, amoral is the opposite in
the sense of a wholesale rejection of the jurisdiction, maybe
even existence, of morality. Immorality accepts the rules,
but break them; amorality does not accept that there are
rules to be broken. So immorality is the semantic opposite,
whereas amorality is the existential opposite.
