One of the many things I like about being part of the Avians
is getting book recommendations from the group even if the
books aren't always strictly noir or hardboiled. You folks
have given me tons of new things to add to my bottomless list
of books to read.
In the spirit of returning the favor I would like to
recommend a great novel I just finished reading called, "Fat
City" by Leonard Gardner.
It certainly has noir/hardboiled elements: it is set in the
world of small-time boxing and features two boxers who are
both losers and who are both going down in more than one
sense of that phrase.
It's beautifully and compactly written and seems
extraordinarily authentic in terms of capturing this sad
world and the people trapped in it.
John Huston, no stranger to hardboiled territory, turned it
into a wonderfilm starring Stacy Keach and a very young Jeff
Bridges some years ago.
If you haven't seen the movie or read the book I commend both
of them to your attention.
Cheers,
Mike
