I thought that was a kind of unfortunate remake. The
miscasting of Shelly Winters in Ida Lupino's role was a
little embarrassing. And I thought Palance brought nothing
particularly new to the part of Roy. Bogart's seething
bitterness at his perceived betrayal by Velma is slightly
comic in Palance's portraial. It's always fool hardy to take
on a brilliant performance and try to bring something new to
it. At least they didn't do Casablanca or Maltese Falcon.
Mitchum's remake of The Big Sleep is stupendously awful. And
Marlow is a role he cold have played 20 years earlier.
