my answer is easy: context, please! If I get my hands on a
reprint novel that has a fore-or afterword, I'll be sure to
read that first and the novel can wait. Sometimes a good
fore- or afterword can be better than the actual text. I'm
not saying this was the case here, but I really enjoyed
George's foreword in one of the Peter Rabe reprints from the
Stark House.
