Talk about DETOUR made me want to read more about it and I
looked at two reference works. Stephens's FILM NOIR doesn't
tell much, but Naremore's MORE THAN NIGHT gives couple
interesting points:
- the film got only one review at the time, Variety saying
that the film was "okay as a supporting dualer" (23 January
1946)
- Ulmer wrote a script for the PRC studios called "Single
Indemnity" right after DOUBLE INDEMNITY proved to be a
success
- there's a contemporary critic called Andrew Britton who
compares DETOUR to Henry James and Freud's writings on
"secondary revision"; Naremore seems to mention this with a
bit of irony
Naremore also sees that the imagery of DETOUR foreshadows
PSYCHO.
