As Mark points out, Hammett's THE MALTESE FALCON is the most
obvious choice.
You also might want to try Joe Gores's INTERFACE. DOnald
Westlake, in his Richard Stark persona, comes close to that
objective third person mode, but doesn't bring it off as
completely as Hammett or Gores.
