I agree with Ed that Appointment is a fine novel and I've
read it several times. Butterfield 8 did not impress me when
I read it many years ago. Pal Joey didn't do much for me but
I rather liked Sermons and Soda Water. The three stories it
contains introduced me to O'Hara with his sharp eye for
detail and the sly, almost bitchy touches that I find
amusing.
He hated being so identified with the short story but he was
too good at them to avoid that label. The collection Assembly
is a good representative sample.
