I attended a pre-release showing of The American Friend at UC
Berkeley. Wenders (wearing a Stetson hat and cowboy
boots)introduced and discussed the film. He claimed that
Highsmith had told him she thought Friend coincided with her
intentions moreso than did any of the other films based on
her work (Strangers On A Train, Purple Noon). from IMDB:
Patricia Highsmith initially disliked Wim Wenders' film
because Ripley's character didn't match her intentions. Only
after she saw the film at a regular screening did she admit
that Wenders had captured the essence of Ripley.
