I seem to remember a running gag in the William Conrad Nero
Wolfe. Whenever the cop he regularly sparred with stood up
out of the chair in Wolfe's study, he would rise very
gracefully without using the arms of the chair. This would
infuriate Wolfe, leaving him ranting to Archie after the cop
had left, something like, "He does that just to make me
mad!"
Perhaps a connection between Dick's two comments?
