Creator of detective Virgil Tibbs (made famous by Sidney
Poitier), John Ball was born on July 8, 1911. He won the
Edgar for _In the Heat of the Night_ (1965) and chaired the
U-California Mystery Library series. He died in 1988.
For my radio program on July 10th, I plan to play Ray
Charles's version of "In the Heat of the Night" and a version
of "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs," composed by Quincy Jones.
