The only one of these books I'm familiar with is the Dennis
Dooley volume, which I read a while back. It provided some
interesting insights into Hammett's work. It essentially
points out the same aspects of his writing as many other
critical works but, I found, in a more consise manner.
********* Yup. The Dooley book seems pretty good. I've only
read parts of it. As you note, Harry, when reading about an
author's works, the same themes get recycled again and
again.
As far as new books, I've got The Philosophy of Film Noir (or
something like that) and Jack O'Connell's Alleys of Noir
coming from Amazon.
I've been slowly working my way a few pages at a time through
George Martin's Feast of Crows. At first I was disenchanted
with it, but halfway through it's drawing me in. It seemed to
me that in this fourth in a series that he had migrated
somewhat away from the characters and was concentrating more
on plot, a plot that is moving at glacial speed. Border's had
an Art of George Martin book that had paintings of the many
characters and scenes from the book that was
interesting.
