JDM is the guy who got me started in the collecting
paperbacks game. In the late '50s and early '60s, I couldn't
get enough of his books. I've read all of them once, many of
them twice, some of them more than that. I can see, now, many
flaws that I didn't notice 40 years ago, and I can certainly
see why people might not like the books today, but that
doesn't change the way I felt then. Running across one I
hadn't read was a magic moment.
I remember when I was in grad school, taking an evening
French class so I could satisfy part of the language
requirement. The class was driving me nuts, and at the break
I left campus, drove downtown to a newsstand and bought a JDM
book. I got back late to the class, which brought a
disapproving comment from the teacher, but my evening was
much improved.
One title the a lot of people think is among the best is A
FLASH OF GREEN.
