I also suggest Stephen Hunter's Dirty White Boys, which is
more heavy on the redneck than the noir. Sure, Bud Pewtie (a
truly great redneck name) is a Sheriff of a rural town, but
he's an alcoholic cop, having an affair with his partners
wife while his life swirls out of is control, which qualifies
as noir.
***************** I'll second that. I've read several of
Hunter's books, but Dirty White Boys was the best. Great
story and some great tongue-in-cheek humor. Lamar is a great
bad guy. Doesn't he spend time in prison planning the perfect
crime, and it turns out to be three people walking into a
crowded Denny's restaurant with guns. That's great.
