I happened upon an advance reading copy of THE POSSUM ALWAYS
RINGS TWICE, by Bruce Hale, in the Chet Gecko series of
mysteries. The cover says they're for people aged 8-12. I'd
never heard of this series before, but the other titles
include FAREWELL, MY LUNCHBAG ("If danger is my business,
then dinner is my passion"); THE BIG NAP; THE MALTED FALCON
("It was tall, dark, and chocolatey--the stuff dreams are
made of"); TROUBLE IS MY BEESWAX; and MURDER, MY TWEET.
The first line of this one is "Down these mean streets a
gecko must go." Chet's partner is a mockingbird named Natalie
Attired, and at the start he's beaten up by a wolverine bully
named Ben Dova. He tells the bully,
"You're so dumb you put lipstick on your forehead to make up
your mind."
There are a books based on Sherlock Holmes aimed at kids
these ages, like BASIL OF BAKER STREET, and I'm all for ones
that'll get them ready for grown-up hardboiled books. Anyone
on the list with kids that age who've read these?
