It is interesting to compare Jim Thompson's thoroughly
convincing and downright scary psychopaths to David Goodis'
rather baroque versions of psychosis - these elaborate and
almost mystical, vaguely Freudian obsessions that grip the
hero and won't let go. Both effective, but so different in
effect.
